From “Just Posting” to a Strategy: Our Marketing Journey at AakiTech

At the start of 2024, marketing at AakiTech did not have much of a roadmap. We were putting content out into the world but without clear goals, campaigns or a way to measure if it was working. It felt reactive; doing what we thought marketing “looked” like. A year later, we have gone from that uncertainty to an evolving strategy we are proud of. This is the story of how we got here, what we learned along the way and why starting small matters.

Zimbabwe’s New Mines Bill Just Got Gazetted - But What Does That Actually Mean?

Zimbabwe’s New Mines Bill Just Got Gazetted - But What Does That Actually Mean?

On June 21st, 2025, Zimbabwe officially gazetted the Mines and Minerals Bill (H.B. 1, 2025). For those unfamiliar with the term, “gazetted” means it was formally published by Parliament as the first official step in the legislative process. It doesn’t mean it’s law yet, but it means the process has begun. This may sound like just another bureaucratic update but if passed, this Bill could mark a major shift in Zimbabwe’s approach to mining, environmental accountability, and community participation.

Psychological Safety at AakiTech: Building a Culture of Openness

Psychological Safety at AakiTech: Building a Culture of Openness

Psychological safety matters, especially in a startup because startups move fast. At AakiTech, we are learning to pause where it matters. As a small, value-driven team in technology, our mission goes beyond building digital solutions. It includes how we work together to build them. In a high-pressure industry, we have been asking an important question: What does it mean to create a workplace where people feel safe enough to speak up?

Youth, Tech & the Power to Build: Reflections from AakiTech x UCT Interview

Youth, Tech & the Power to Build: Reflections from AakiTech x UCT Interview

This Youth Month, we have been thinking a lot about what it means to be a young person in tech - not just using digital tools, but building with them, shaping futures with them. Earlier this year, I reached out to UCT’s Alumni Relations team to explore how we might reconnect with the institution - not just as alumni or former students, but as builders. That led to a conversation, and eventually, an invitation for AakiTech to be featured in UCT’s Youth Month 2025 series.

Understanding Authentication: OAuth 2.0, SSO, and Why It All Matters

Understanding Authentication: OAuth 2.0, SSO, and Why It All Matters

Ever wondered what is actually happening when you “Sign in with Google”? Or why some apps let you log in once and access everything, while others ask for your password again and again? Behind these experiences are systems like OAuth 2.0, SSO, and sometimes a lot of engineering to make things feel seamless. At AakiTech, we recently unpacked these flows during an internal AakiBytes session, where one of our developers walked us through the layers of authentication - and what tools like Docker have to do with it.

Why Technical Debt Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Why Technical Debt Is Everyone’s Responsibility

In the fast-paced world of tech development, “technical debt” often looms in the background. But what happens when technical debt isn’t just about old code—it’s compounded by rushed decisions, siloed communication, and overlooked system vulnerabilities? This is the story of how technical debt became a shared challenge between our team and a client, why it impacted more than just developers, and how we navigated it together (and sometimes apart).

The Series of Sharing: AakiTech’s Journey Unfolds

At AakiTech, we know that building technology in Africa—for Africa—is about more than writing good code or launching sleek apps. It’s about understanding our positionality. It’s about acknowledging power. It’s about unlearning the idea that “progress” must always look like Silicon Valley. This blog is the beginning of a series—an attempt to think aloud, in public, about who we are, how we build, and most importantly, why we build the way we do.

The AakiTech Way: Rethinking Stand-Ups for Efficiency and Focus

The AakiTech Way: Rethinking Stand-Ups for Efficiency and Focus

In the world of fast-paced technology and Agile development, daily stand-ups are often praised as the heartbeat of team alignment. But let’s be honest—many of them have become stale. A routine check-in that was meant to energize and guide the team often devolves into a mechanical status report. Updates are rattled off. Blockers go unresolved. Priorities shift after the meeting, leaving teams misaligned and, at times, overwhelmed. At AakiTech, we saw the writing on the wall. The traditional stand-up wasn’t serving us. So we asked the hard questions: What if the stand-up wasn’t just a formality? What if it became a space to unlock clarity, focus, and real-time support? The answer led us to build what we now call the AakiTech Flavored Stand-Up—a system designed to strip away the fluff and put intention at the center of the conversation. Here’s how we flipped the script.
